"a credit crunch, not a creative crunch"
-John Galliano

What I'm Wearing:
Vintage Blazer, My Mother's Crop Top Sweater from the Eighties (one of my most treasured garments), H&M Platform Wedges, Carolyn Massey Tote (the tote was the invitation to her catwalk show at LFW last September) & American Apparel Leggings.

I'm going to say it. Just have it out. Durham really bores me sometimes. For a town that has such charming streets, brimming with what would appear to be a quinessential aura of artistic pursuit, there is a tedious amount of convention clogging the cobblestones. Sometimes I feel like any sartorial inclinations I have might be fading...or dissolving...or slowly muting into a rather dull montage of black leggings and oversized knitwear. Maybe I've temporarily delved into a style plateau, this is probably the case. After all, there is definetely a limit to how much one can consider fashion, when being saturated with essays and journals on the rather tedious topic of women in the eighteenth century.

On a more positive note. I had a rather spontaneous Monday night; what started as a quiet meal ended up in pure rambunctious delight. A great deal of italian-spanish conversations were had, a lot of cocktails were drunk and I even think there was some sort of olive platter going round at 1 am. If you haven't been to Fabios in Durham, go, go, go. It is def. the best bar and I live across from it, which is a very dangerous situation to find yourself in.

Anyway back to work. Big Mugs of Tea & def. a midnight walk later.

Your outfit reminds me of one I saw today, but that girl's sweater was bright red. I like that it's a refreshing twist on plain old black.

Yet you're also wearing knitwear and black leggings. Maybe people think the same about you.

I hope you realise how painfully shallow it is that you've called Durham (which is actually a really nice town) 'boring' just because other people obviously don't care about how they look as much as you do. I also hope you realise that you're wearing knitwear and black leggings in the pictures in this post.

even here in big berlin it happens that you get stuck in a style rut. but isn't routine part of the definition of "style" - as long as it doesn't come along with losing curiosity ... ?
all my best,

Hi, just to say I love your blog! Was reading the comments and someone asked if your were Spanish I was wondering the same? Trying to teach my Spanish boyfriend English...wondering if you had any tips!! ha ha...O and i wish the stupid anons would go elsewhere, how is it shallow to call Durham boring! It's her blog, her opinion. And plus it is boring...it consists of one street. LOVE! XXXX

Being sartorially pioneering in late January is difficult for ANYONE. I love those H&M shoes. I saw them in red, but it was such a weird color; what would they go with?

Jeeeeez, whether or not you find a place boring clearly depends on your interests.

If you are interested in fast-moving fashion trends, then Durham can indeed be boring. But it can also be boring if you are interested in live music, for example. It can also just be boring when you do not have the opportunity to go elsewhere for 2 months at a time. Frassy has the right to express that, she is certainly not the first to suggest her interests are not fulfilled by this city! That does not make her shallow.

On another note though, Durham doesn't only have one street, it has quite a few and all of them are worthwhile exploring and generally full of beautiful architecture.

Lets not get petty now..

I know EXACTLY how you feel!
while my unitown hildesheim definitely is charming and I really couldn't imagine studying literature and writing in a big city with all of the distraction that brings, you get into a routine of dressing.
in relation to the city you're still eccentric but you already feel up to something new.

this is why I am happy to go hamburg ever so often- which is just a 3 hour train ride away but feels like another continent.
to seek in fresh energy.

I have to admit I enjoy going back to my little literature bubble afterwards though, there's so much creative energy in the exile. ;)

Durham IS boring. Unfortunately I'm 15 years better qualified to make that judgement but you're right anyway.
I've had messages from 2 of the bar staff at fabios asking why i haven't been recently, haahaha. I'll be back where i belong tomorrooow... you keep working hard, mrs. xxxxx

PS book your tickets.

I was one of the "stupid anons" and I just meant that if I was thinking the same thing as she was, I would see her and she is doing it too! The exact same thing.

Anonymous said...

In my opinion (which I am entitled to just like Frassy, right?) it is quite shallow to judge a place on whether or not the people who live there dress a certain way. I am not insulting anyone or being rude by saying something on a blog. This is a PUBLIC forum therefore I should be able to input my opinion without being called "stupid".

You criticise fellow students for being boring but some of us are here to work and get decent degrees, so taking a few hours in the morning to pick out an intricate daring outfit, photograph it 50 times and then blog on it is a luxury we can't afford

You post all these pictures up but this is stuff you wear in your room, when I actually see you out and about in Durham you look pretty much the same as everyone else here.

Audrey Leighton said...

A luxury you can't afford?! Come on! We are all doing degrees in this town, we all experience the same stress, pressures and have similar workloads, yet we make time for hobbies. Or at least we should. If you are SO ridiculously busy, maybe you should refrain from logging onto Frassy, because that, is def. a waste of your incredibly precious time! And maybe get back to work instead of analysing what I'm wearing when you see me on the street! ;) But all in all, flattered you even take the time to notice me.

Hattie said...

I completely agree though, Durham's ridiculously boring. It's killing me being here, and yes it does have a lot to do with the way people dress. In a roundabout way. x

sweaters help cover the body

hot girls dont cover their bodies

they usually wear "lace thong body suits"

because theyre thin.

so....yea.....youre fat arent you?
